When we first started Air Plant Design Studio less than two years ago, air plants were just starting to catch on. We’d get all sorts of blank looks from friends and family when we told them we were starting an air plant business. (“Air planes?” “Are those like succulents?”). We faced the same confusion when we told people we’d be incorporating them in our wedding. That confusion quickly turned to delight, though, when they saw the little plants in action. We found that the air plants – incorporated in our centerpieces, boutonnieres, and even my bridal bouquet – fit perfectly with our eclectic style and the tropical climate of our Florida setting.

Since then, we’ve seen more and more wedding planners, floral designers, and creative DIY couples incorporate air plants into their big day. Tillandsia can be incorporated into nearly any wedding style or setting, but today we’re rounding up some of our favorite beach weddings featuring air plants.

Living in Florida, we can totally get behind a good beach wedding. There is just something so romantic about the sand between your toes, the waves as your backdrop, and the ocean breeze as your ambiance. Plus, what better way to make sure your guests (and you!) can relax and enjoy the event than to have it on the beach. Living in Florida, though, we’ve seen our fair share of beach wedding décor that can verge on, ahem, kitschy. So how do you make sure your beach wedding doesn’t look like the typical Sandals brochure? Air plants!

The rustic beach wedding:

We love this table scape from PopSugar.com's roundup of wedding beach decor which features air plants, drift wood, and messages in a bottle for a rustic “washed at sea” look:

This bridal inspiration shoot on Bridal Musings features air plants in the rustic-chic centerpieces, as well as the bride’s bouquet. The fact that tillandsia naturally have that “sea creature” look make them the perfect accent to beach décor without screaming “beach theme.”

The modern beach wedding:

Just because you’re getting married with the beach as your backdrop, doesn’t mean you can’t flaunt a modern aesthetic. I absolutely swoon over this modern beach wedding inspiration shoot by Lavender & Twine, featured on Style Me Pretty. Their use of air plants in the centerpieces, that STUNNING bouquet, the bride’s hair piece, and even the super-modern cake helps bridge the gap between the natural beauty of the beach, and clean, modern geometric shapes and bright colors.

The Glam-Bohemian Beach Wedding

This inspiration shoot, also by the amazing photographers at Lavender & Twine (I might be their new online groupie), featured on Green Wedding Shoes, blends fresh bohemian style with lush, glamorous, and feminine details for an effect that is dreamy without being overdone. Their use of air plants in this shoot bring a bit of eclectic, whimsical flair to the feminine pink and blush English Roses and florals.
